Holden got an early birthday present this week that I am absolutely in love with. It’s a children’s book called The Watermelon Seed by Greg Pizzoli, a writer and illustrator who, it turns out, is from my hometown!
First of all, the book is gorgeous. The 3-color screenprints in green, pink and black make this one of the most visually interesting kids’ books I’ve read (and trust me, I’ve seen quite a few in the past year). But also, this book is funny.
It’s about a crocodile who luuuuuurvs watermelon (CHOMP! SLURP! CHOMP!) but freaks out when he swallows a seed. It just begs to be performed and Holdy cracks up every time we read it. Check out the book trailer (which, apparently, is a thing? who knew?)
I love where he’s doing The Crying Game over there in the corner. Seriously, it’s the cutest. Check it out.
I wanted to learn more about Greg, so I checked out his website, where he has more books (Not Very Scary looks adorable), his sketchbook, some of his screenprints and more. He has an Etsy shop too. This guy is so talented and his work has a great sense of humor. I love this one:
Greg Pizzoli, you’re my hometown hero!
