to my son on his second birthday

23.03.16

Gatsby/GB/Geebo/Gilbert/Goose (that last nickname is a new one I’m trying out)–

You’re two years old today. What a big little man you are. I was rereading last year’s letter, which was all about how sweet and gentle you are and I just had to laugh. You’re still super sweet and lovey, of course, but you are now a full-fledged… toddler.

My baby boy is now a toddler @ohbotherblog

You get into everything. You started walking not long after your first birthday and have been on the move ever since. You’re like a ferret–you steal things and hoard them in various places. We once went three days without a TV remote until we found where you had put it.

Big shoes to fill @ohbotherblog

You have yourself quite a temper, though for some reason I still don’t find it as difficult as Holdy’s. When you get mad, you throw whatever is in your hand–your bottle, your Nuk, your toy, your shoe. Sometimes you’ll put your hand up to hit and when I tell you “no hit,” you look me dead in the eyes, walk over to the nearest wall and hit it, as if to say, “I’m wishing this was your face.”

Toddler tantrums @ohbotherblog

We’ve been trying Time Outs, but when I sit you down to talk about your behavior, you always make a silly face at me by opening your mouth wide to diffuse the mood. “You’re lucky you’re cute,” is a phrase I say often.

Silliness diffuses anger @Ohbotherblog

You love paper products for some reason–paper towels, napkins, toilet paper, baby wipes. You’re fascinated by toothbrushes, so much so that I bought you two as your Valentine’s Day present. You are absolutely obsessed with vehicles–“hucks” (trucks)–and you point out every one you see. Every jeep, van, truck, car, or tractor, which makes for interesting car rides. You get the biggest thrill by sitting on a tractor; maybe we’ll go to Home Depot today for your birthday, haha.

My kid loves vehicles @ohbotherblog

Your vocabulary has grown tremendously. You ask, “what’s that?” all the time and repeat words and phrases so well that sometimes we have to laugh about it. You enjoy learning and seem to take it very seriously. One of your very first words was “Holdy,” and it’s still the first word you say every morning, asking her whereabouts. That’s followed immediately by “ballal” (bottle), which you request multiple times a day. Your newest phrase–much to my dismay–is, “I farted.” I blame your Duke for that one.

Moving into Sissy's room @ohbotherblog

You’re still a great sleeper, even after we moved your crib into your sister’s room a few weeks ago. I was hoping your presence would make sleeping through the night less stressful for her and that it would also bring the two of you closer. We have to contend with some silliness at bedtime, but so far, you’ve both been sleeping pretty well through the night with no issues.

You call me, “Baba,” and you’re my little buddy. Sometimes you surprise me by coming up out of nowhere and hugging my leg.

❤️

You’re very close with your Duke, who you spend every day with. You love to go on walks with him in the jogging stroller. I suspect Duke sneaks you sips of soda like he did your sister. Next month, you’ll be going to school with Holdy and I know Duke will miss his pal. I’m hoping that means Duke will be up for some nighttime babysitting to make up for it.

GB loves his Duke @ohbotherblog

You love to dance, preferring the Riverdance-style. We’ll be literally anywhere and you’ll hear a few strains of music and your hands are instantly in the air.

You’re sweet and silly and loving and curious. You start out tentative around other people but warm to them quickly (unless they’re the doctor). You are soft spoken (when you aren’t yelling and screeching with your sister).

Your best friend remains your Holdy. You guys are two peas in a pod and pretty much inseparable, although you are starting to exert your independence more. You feed off of each other, which means our evenings at home are often crazy.

Weirdos.

I’m so glad that you guys have each other and I hope you stay just as close as you grow, even though I predict there will be a lot of conspiring against me in our futures.

They say the years are short and the days are long and that’s the absolute truth. One minute I was rocking my tiny little baby to sleep and I blinked and now he’s climbing on top of the coffee table (again. Stop doing that please.).

You’re growing into such a fantastic little boy and bring so much joy to our days. I can’t wait to see how you blossom at school. I know Holdy will take good care of you and introduce you to everyone as “My GB.”

Happy, Happy Birthday, GB.

I’m sorry I still haven’t made you a Shutterfly book.

happy 7 months, GB

happy 7 months GB @ohbotherblog

So I’m a little late, but on October 23, GB hit the 7 month mark.

Weight: My scale is broken and says I weigh 20 pounds less than I do (I refuse to fix it, of course), so I really don’t know. I’m guessing he’s close to 17 pounds right now. Just about into size 3 diapers.

Likes: being held, eating, being “hugged” by his sister, flying in the air, being tickled, trying to sit up, belly raspberries, grabbing his feet, “talking,” grabbing at everything, trying to steal people’s food

Dislikes: Being hangry (hey, I feel you, kid). That’s really about it. He is showing some signs of teething but generally doesn’t seem to be too upset about it yet.

Eats: This guy eats like a champ. We just moved up to level 2 foods–combination stuff–and there’s nothing he really doesn’t like. He tries to steal the spoon and feed himself and often beats on his high chair tray in approval.

Sleeps: Like a boss. 8:30 or 9pm to about 7:30am, or whenever his sister runs in his room and wakes him up (argh!)

Accomplishments: He’s allllllmost sitting up unassisted. He talks a lot and has kind of said, “Dada” (grrr!). Smiling (a lot!), chuckling, rolling over like crazy, grabbing toys, kicking like a soccer player, putting his Nuk in his mouth.

He’s my sweetheart.

the lazy mom’s guide to making your own baby food

02.10.14

Look, I try to be a good mom, I really do. But momming is hard, especially when you’re doing it by yourself, so sometimes you gotta get creative. And find some good mom hacks.

It’s almost 10pm on a Take-Out-The-Trash Night and, rather than throw away the fresh produce that our family of three never eats in its entirety, I decided to have a puree party and make some baby food for GB. On the menu: peaches.

Now, I didn’t get this brilliant idea to blog about this until I was already in the process, so I don’t have a “before” photo to show you, but I’m pretty sure you know what a peach looks like so we’re cool, right?

The Lazy Mom’s Guide to Making Your Own Baby Food

Take that pretty ripe produce you’ve got in your fruit bowl or fridge. Throw it in a Crock-Pot and go do life stuff for a few hours. (I’ve got a mini Crock-Pot that I got at Target for like $15 that’s great for entertaining… and, it turns out, making baby food.)

Take the now-soft and cooked produce out of the Crock-Pot and remove any yuckies, like pits or skins.

(Appetizing, right?)

Deposit the mush into a Mini Bullet (no, not Mommy’s special Mini Bullet) or blender.

Blend that stuff up.

Dump the puree into whatever baby food containers you’ve got.

Wait until it cools and throw it in the freezer with whatever random baby food you’ve previously made. Or in the fridge for tomorrow. Or serve it up immediately. Whatever floats your boat.

Throw the bullet and whatever utensils you used in the dishwasher.

Feel good knowing you made your kid some baby food.

Let’s be honest, though: I’ve got plenty of the ready-made stuff for back-up and nights where I don’t have time to mess around with making my own.

It’s so hard for me to believe, but this guy is six months old today.

Weight: My scale is broken and says I weigh 20 pounds less than I do (I refuse to fix it, of course), so I really don’t know. At his pediatrician appointment last week they said 15.9 lbs.

Likes: being held, milk, his sister, sitting outside, watching the fan, when mommy makes crazy faces and voices, the baby gym, being “hugged” by his sister, flying in the air, being tickled, trying to sit up, belly raspberries, grabbing his feet, “talking.”

Dislikes: He is still super pleasant. We recently got over a bout of Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease and neither the doctor or I could tell because he was still so content. He did want to be held a lot last week when he was sick. He doesn’t like getting hot in his car seat.

Eats: We just started solid foods this week. So far, he’s loving his rice cereal, avocados and apples.

Sleeps: Through the night. In his crib. Thank the Lord.

Accomplishments: Smiling (a lot!), chuckling, rolling over like crazy, chewing on his hands, grabbing toys, kicking like a soccer player, holding his head up, putting his Nuk in his mouth. He’s getting better at sitting up with help. He coos and “talks” a lot.

Seriously, this kid is awesome.

But, so as not to be all braggy like “that mom,” here’s a true look at the behind-the-scenes of our little shoot today.

Now that he’s discovered his feet, it’s a little tougher to keep him still or to get him to smile for a photo.

IMG_4096.JPG

IMG_4097.JPG

IMG_4101.JPG

He’s a mover.

IMG_4094.JPG

He’s really curious and is especially entertained by his sister, so I enlisted her help to try to get a smile.

IMG_4093.JPG

It didn’t really work.

(Notice the blur in the lower right corner.)

But still, no complaints with this guy. Lovin’ every day with him.

23.08.14

I’ll update you on the result of our craycation shortly, but first… Happy 5 Months, GB!

happy 5 months, gb @ohbotherblog

Weight: According to my super scientific stand-on-the-scale-with-him-stand-on-the-scale-without-him method, about 15 lbs.

Likes: being held, milk, his sister, sitting outside, watching the fan, when mommy makes crazy faces and voices, the baby gym, being “hugged” by his sister, flying in the air, being tickled, dipping his feet in the pool, trying to sit up, belly raspberries

Dislikes: This kid is pretty freaking pleasant. There’s not much that upsets him… except being hot (so being at the beach for craycation was just fantastic).

Eats: Every 3-4 hours. Mommy’s milk or a 6oz bottle of breastmilk & formula combined.

Sleeps: Through the night. In his crib. Thank the Lord.

Accomplishments: Smiling (a lot!), chuckling, rolling over like crazy, chewing on his hands, grabbing, kicking like a soccer player, holding his head up, putting his Nuk in his mouth

I love you, Buddy! Thanks for being so easygoing. Please stay that way.

Here’s a behind-the-scenes shot of today’s shoot:

Happy 4 month birthday, GB @ohbotherblog

Happy 4 months, Big Guy. You are the sweetest baby; so content and pleasant 95% of the time. I’m pretty sure you think your name is “Handsome” (maybe it should be).

Happy 4 Month Birthday, GB @ohbotherblog

Weight: According to my super scientific stand-on-the-scale-with-him-stand-on-the-scale-without-him method, about 13.5 lbs.

Likes: being held, milk, his sister, sitting outside, watching the fan, watching mommy, when mommy makes crazy faces and voices, the baby gym, “boots and pants and boots and pants and boots and pants and boots and pants,” being “hugged” by his sister, flying in the air, being tickled

Dislikes: This kid is pretty freaking pleasant. There’s not much that upsets him. He doesn’t love the Bumbo chair yet.

Eats: Every 3-4 hours. Mommy’s milk or a 6oz bottle of breastmilk & formula combined.

Sleeps: This big guy now sleeps in the crib in the nursery and… THROUGH THE NIGHT! He generally sleeps from about 9p to 6a with very few interruptions.

Accomplishments: Smiling (a lot!), chuckling, rolling over, chewing on his hands, grabbing the rings in his baby gym, kicking like a soccer player, holding his head up

Milestones: May be showing signs of teething (?)

Oh, and look who had to get in the post:

happy three month birthday, GB

23.06.14

At 2:31 pm today, Mr. Gatsby (GB) will be three months old. Here’s a snapshot of the little man:

Gatsby is three months old @ohbotherblog

Weight: 12 lbs., 6 oz. The pediatrician called him a “string bean” at last week’s appointment. Pretty sure I was never ever considered a string bean.

Likes: being held, milk, his sister, sitting outside, watching the fan, watching mommy, when mommy makes crazy faces and voices, the baby gym

Dislikes: not being held, tummy time, riding in the car without a Nuk, not being paid attention to

Eats: Every 3-4 hours

Sleeps: Alert the media: we’ve had a few nights of 8 hours of sleep! (11a-6p). Usually it ranges between 6-8 lately. I’ll take it!

Accomplishments: Smiling (a lot!), chuckling, rolled over from front to back several times, chewing on his hands, grabbing the rings in his baby gym, kicking like a soccer player.

Places Visited: The Maryland Zoo for Sissy’s birthday, The Farm, Redeux Grand Opening

Gatsby is three months old @ohbotherblog

Also, this month’s pics may look adorable, but I assure you, nothing in my life goes that smoothly. Here are some outtakes before “the talent” was given some milk from craft services.

happy two month birthday, GB

24.05.14

Gatsby is two months old @ohbotherblog

At 2:31 pm yesterday, Mr. Gatsby (GB) turned two months old. Here’s a snapshot of the little man:

Weight: according to my unofficial stand-on-the-scale-without-him-then-stand-on-the-scale-with-him method, he weighs about 11.5-12 lbs.

Likes: being held, milk, his sister, sitting outside

Dislikes: not being held

Eats: Every 3-4 hours

Sleeps: This past week we ranged between 6-hour chunks of sleep at night to 2-hour chunks of sleep. So, we’re still not there yet. During the day, he has more alert time but he generally takes a 1-2 hour nap in the morning, a solid 3-4 hour nap in the afternoon, on-and-off between fussing in the evening.

Places Visited: Turkey Hill Experience, various parks, Second Saturday on the Square

Gatsby is two months old @ohbotherblog

Because I really boned up Holden’s monthly photos by not showing her sitting in a chair or something to give perspective, I’m going to try a bit harder this time around. The adorable month tie stickers are from Bump2Baby Stickers on Etsy.

happy one month, GB

23.04.14

Gatsby is one month old @ohbotherblog

At 2:31 pm today, Mr. Gatsby will officially be one month old. Here’s a snapshot of the little man:

Nicknames: GB (from Holdy), G, Stinky (from me)

Weight: according to my unofficial stand-on-the-scale-without-him-then-stand-on-the-scale-with-him method, he weighs about 10 lbs.

Likes: being held, milk, nipples (mine)

Dislikes: not being held

Tolerates: the swing, the car seat, the Boba carrier, the Moby wrap, his sister’s “affection”

Eats: whenever he wants, but generally every 2-3 hours during the day, cluster feeding during his fussy “Witching Hour” from about 6-10 pm, every 2-3 hours at night

Sleeps: he has more alert time now but he generally takes a 1-2 hour nap in the morning, a solid 3-4 hour nap in the afternoon, on-and-off between fussing in the evening, and then in 2-3 hour chunks at night (sometimes he gives me 4 hours, woo hoo!)

Places Visited: Central Market York, Gymboree, CoWork 155, foodstruck, Target, the grocery store

Because I really boned up Holden’s monthly photos by not showing her sitting in a chair or something to give perspective, I’m going to try a bit harder this time around. The adorable month tie stickers are from Bump2Baby Stickers on Etsy.

Gatsby is one month old @ohbotherblog

Here’s a look back at GB’s first month:

Glad to know ya, little guy! Here’s to many more.

the boy who only wants to be held

17.04.14

Newborn only wants to be held @ohbotherblog

I was kind of joking when, before Gatsby was born, I said he was a mama’s boy and didn’t want to leave me and that’s why he hadn’t come out yet. Turns out that may not be too far from the case.

Little man always wants to be held. Like, all the time. Like, hates every infant seat and swing. Like, barely tolerates his bassinet.

If I could snuggle him all day and night, I would. But he has a rambunctious older sister. But I have a house to manage (ha.ha.). But I have to pee sometimes. So I have to put him down and let him cry.

Now that his neck is a little stronger, I can put him in the Boba Carrier to free up my hands a bit. He usually fusses at first and then he falls asleep into a hot little ball of fire on my chest… for a bit. It’s never a cure-all.

Newborn only wants to be held @ohbotherblog

I was carrying him in the Moby Wrap but the damn thing is so complicated to wrap and it never felt entirely supportive. I found myself still using a hand to support him, so that was a little counterproductive.

I’m rereading all the stuff about how you can’t spoil your newborn and it’s… comforting. Though in some ways, I do want to spoil the little guy. He’s already getting shafted by his attention-sucking big sister… and just the fact that he’s the second-born.

I wish I could snuggle him more. Maybe not at 4am, but, you know.
