a letter to my son on his third birthday

23.03.17

GB, Geebs, Geebo–

Well, kid, you’re three. A threenager, as they say nowadays, and boy does it show. I was rereading last year’s letter and it seems at two you were just practicing for the horror that was to come.

We both feel today has been too much one-on-one time. #pottytraining #mrgatsby #ohbotherblog 🍯

A post shared by ohbotherblog (@nomiddlenamemeg) on

I’ll be honest: the past month or so has been pretty rough. You get, um, explosively emotional sometimes and it seems most of your ire is directed at me. I say sometimes that you’re like an abusive boyfriend–you go from yelling and hitting me one second, to stroking my face and telling me I’m pretty the next. Sometimes, though, you’re very calm and you’re telling me and Holdy, “it’ll be alright.” So my sweet GB is still in there somewhere, but he’s a little more hidden than he used to be. It’s sort of a Bruce Banner/The Hulk situation, I guess.

"GB, why did you take your clothes off?" "To be like Bruce Banner." #hulkout

A post shared by ohbotherblog (@nomiddlenamemeg) on

Speaking of The Hulk, you are obsessed with superheroes. Spider-Man and Captain America mostly. You know all of the Avengers’ first names and like to use them: “Spider-Man Peter Parker” (or Petuh Pawkah in your accent), “Tony Iron Man.” You like to pretend you can climb the wall and you have Spider-Man shoes, shirts, hoodie and underpants.

Ah… underpants. We just did our potty-training bootcamp this weekend and it actually went pretty well. I did have to take home several bags of wet clothes from yesterday’s first attempt at school, but we’ll get there. You’re refusing Pull-Ups now, saying, “I’m big” with a shrug. It’s true, you are.

You started school this year at York Day Nursery. Your teachers are Miss Jennifer, Miss Sheryl and Miss Latasha. You thrive at school. You like to work with your hands and you are so creative. Your school likes to send little notes home with interesting things you’ve said throughout the day. The latest was when you were coloring with a yellow crayon you said, “I’m making sunshine!” You speak in complex sentences and you have an impressively large vocabulary.

York Day Nursery Valentine's Day party

A post shared by ohbotherblog (@nomiddlenamemeg) on

Of course, that vocabulary also includes curse words. Man, you have a filthy mouth; way worse than your sister ever had. The other weekend you were having a morning meltdown in my face so I removed you from my presence. You sat outside my bedroom, banging on the door, repeatedly moaning for me to, “open the fucking door.” Two days later, you were angry at me for not getting your milk (and I was angry at you for not asking nicely), and you yelled at me to, “get the milk, fucker!” I mean, you were using the terms correctly which makes me secretly proud, but obviously that’s not cool, dude. We’re working on it.

Your favorite food is scrambled eggs. You and your sister would eat breakfast for dinner every night if you could… and during Restaurant Week this year you literally did. You love “white milk” and “bars” and that’s about it. You need to eat, kid! Your lack of appetite drives me nuts.

Your sister is your best friend but you guys fight like cats and dogs. You’re at each others necks (sometimes literally) all night, and yet somehow you both choose to sleep together in the same bed every night. I’m so glad that you guys have each other and I hope you stay just as close as you grow… though it does make for some crazy evenings at our house.

Good morning. #ohbotherblog 🍯

A post shared by ohbotherblog (@nomiddlenamemeg) on

You’ve grown to love Sally, who sleeps with you guys every night. You’re warming to Brutus, though I understand having a large creature who’s literally 100 pounds larger than you bounding at your being might be a little frightening.

Best buds both had a big weekend. #brutus #mrgatsby

A post shared by ohbotherblog (@nomiddlenamemeg) on

You’re warm and curious and thoughtful. You’re funny. You’re reserved with people you don’t know. You’re my buddy. You really are a mama’s boy. Sometimes it’s a little ridiculous–you really should be wiping your own nose by now. But I’m glad you still like to give hugs and kisses and I’m secretly happy to still carry you around (sometimes. Not when my hands are full of bags and whatnot).

gb’s birthday clock photo: year 2

23.03.16

So, we have this tradition we stole from my friend’s mom. Every year on the kids’ birthday, I take a photo of them with a clock showing the time they were born.

Last year, GB almost slept through his clock photo:

GB's first birthday clock photo @ohbotherblog

But this year, we nailed it:

GB's birthday clock photo @ohbotherblog

Disregard the date; no idea why it says 3/24.

PS – GB’s birth certificate is actually wrong and says 2:41pm, but I was there and remember the correct time of his exit.

Happy Birthday, Geebs!

to my son on his second birthday

23.03.16

Gatsby/GB/Geebo/Gilbert/Goose (that last nickname is a new one I’m trying out)–

You’re two years old today. What a big little man you are. I was rereading last year’s letter, which was all about how sweet and gentle you are and I just had to laugh. You’re still super sweet and lovey, of course, but you are now a full-fledged… toddler.

My baby boy is now a toddler @ohbotherblog

You get into everything. You started walking not long after your first birthday and have been on the move ever since. You’re like a ferret–you steal things and hoard them in various places. We once went three days without a TV remote until we found where you had put it.

Big shoes to fill @ohbotherblog

You have yourself quite a temper, though for some reason I still don’t find it as difficult as Holdy’s. When you get mad, you throw whatever is in your hand–your bottle, your Nuk, your toy, your shoe. Sometimes you’ll put your hand up to hit and when I tell you “no hit,” you look me dead in the eyes, walk over to the nearest wall and hit it, as if to say, “I’m wishing this was your face.”

Toddler tantrums @ohbotherblog

We’ve been trying Time Outs, but when I sit you down to talk about your behavior, you always make a silly face at me by opening your mouth wide to diffuse the mood. “You’re lucky you’re cute,” is a phrase I say often.

Silliness diffuses anger @Ohbotherblog

You love paper products for some reason–paper towels, napkins, toilet paper, baby wipes. You’re fascinated by toothbrushes, so much so that I bought you two as your Valentine’s Day present. You are absolutely obsessed with vehicles–“hucks” (trucks)–and you point out every one you see. Every jeep, van, truck, car, or tractor, which makes for interesting car rides. You get the biggest thrill by sitting on a tractor; maybe we’ll go to Home Depot today for your birthday, haha.

My kid loves vehicles @ohbotherblog

Your vocabulary has grown tremendously. You ask, “what’s that?” all the time and repeat words and phrases so well that sometimes we have to laugh about it. You enjoy learning and seem to take it very seriously. One of your very first words was “Holdy,” and it’s still the first word you say every morning, asking her whereabouts. That’s followed immediately by “ballal” (bottle), which you request multiple times a day. Your newest phrase–much to my dismay–is, “I farted.” I blame your Duke for that one.

Moving into Sissy's room @ohbotherblog

You’re still a great sleeper, even after we moved your crib into your sister’s room a few weeks ago. I was hoping your presence would make sleeping through the night less stressful for her and that it would also bring the two of you closer. We have to contend with some silliness at bedtime, but so far, you’ve both been sleeping pretty well through the night with no issues.

You call me, “Baba,” and you’re my little buddy. Sometimes you surprise me by coming up out of nowhere and hugging my leg.

❤️

A photo posted by ohbotherblog (@nomiddlenamemeg) on

You’re very close with your Duke, who you spend every day with. You love to go on walks with him in the jogging stroller. I suspect Duke sneaks you sips of soda like he did your sister. Next month, you’ll be going to school with Holdy and I know Duke will miss his pal. I’m hoping that means Duke will be up for some nighttime babysitting to make up for it.

GB loves his Duke @ohbotherblog

You love to dance, preferring the Riverdance-style. We’ll be literally anywhere and you’ll hear a few strains of music and your hands are instantly in the air.

You’re sweet and silly and loving and curious. You start out tentative around other people but warm to them quickly (unless they’re the doctor). You are soft spoken (when you aren’t yelling and screeching with your sister).

Your best friend remains your Holdy. You guys are two peas in a pod and pretty much inseparable, although you are starting to exert your independence more. You feed off of each other, which means our evenings at home are often crazy.

Weirdos.

I’m so glad that you guys have each other and I hope you stay just as close as you grow, even though I predict there will be a lot of conspiring against me in our futures.

They say the years are short and the days are long and that’s the absolute truth. One minute I was rocking my tiny little baby to sleep and I blinked and now he’s climbing on top of the coffee table (again. Stop doing that please.).

You’re growing into such a fantastic little boy and bring so much joy to our days. I can’t wait to see how you blossom at school. I know Holdy will take good care of you and introduce you to everyone as “My GB.”

Happy, Happy Birthday, GB.

I’m sorry I still haven’t made you a Shutterfly book.

In keeping with my (stolen) tradition, I snapped Holdy’s birthday clock photo at 7:23pm on her birthday.

Take a photo of your child every year at their birth time on their birthday! @ohbotherblog

While it’s probably the most stressful minute of my year to try to capture that shot, I’m going to try to do it every birthday. (And yes, I realize that the date format is in European style in that shot. Oh well.)

Here are previous years’ clock photos:

Getting GB’s clock photo will prove a bit more difficult, as he was born at 2:31pm (despite his birth certificate saying 2:41pm–trust me, I remember. Oh, I remember.)

 happy 12 months, gb @ohbotherblog

He’s a year old now, so we can stop tracking all of this stuff, right?

Weight: 20 lbs

Likes: Eating! Doors! throwing stuff on the floor, climbing up the steps, pulling himself up on everything, stealing things from his sister

Dislikes: Not being paid attention to, being diverted from his target destination (the dog food bowl, the front door), not eating

Eats: Everything and a lot of it. The kid ate a full slice of pizza on his own last night.

Sleeps: A great sleeper–goes down and stays down no problem. Two naps a day.

Teeth: Seven

Accomplishments: Climbing! Pulling up on everything, standing, waving, clapping, high fives, mimicking, screeching, “So big!” Not walking yet–I put some big boy shoes on him and now his legs don’t work anymore.

GB’s First Birthday

23.03.15

While GB’s First Birthday party was Saturday, today, March 23, marked the one-year anniversary of his arrival. March 23 at 2:31pm, to be exact (despite the fact that his birth certificate incorrectly states, “2:41pm.” I was there people–I know! They also originally spelled his name, “Gatsy” so clearly they cannot be trusted.)

I have stolen appropriated the Birthday Clock Photo tradition from my friend’s mom who’s done it my friend’s entire life. The idea is simple: take a photo with your kid on their birthday at their birth time with a clock showing the time they were born.

Take a picture of your child every year on their birthday, holding a clock, at the time they were born. @ohbotherblog
(Thanks, Kel & Alesa!)

Holden was born at 7:23pm, so the time is a bit more manageable. She, of course, is not so manageable.

Birthday tradition: clock photo showing birth time @ohbotherblog

To capture GB’s 2:31 photo, I skipped out of work for a bit (sorry, Boss). When I got home, he was napping. I figured I’d just sneak in and snap a quick photo while he slept. Hey–at least it would be kinda funny, right? When I got up there at 2:30, though, he was awake in his crib. Even better. We’ll just sit the clock phone with a clock display in there and snap a shot easy peasy.

Welp.

GB's first birthday @ohbotherblog

to my son on his first birthday

23.03.15

A letter to my son on his first birthday @ohbotherblog

Dear GB,

My sweet, sweet GB. I could tell while I was growing you that you were going to be a gentle soul. You waited until your exact due date to come into this world. I say it’s because you just wanted to hang out with me as long as possible, and you have, indeed, been a Mama’s Boy this first year of your life. Not in a derogatory way, but in the way that you and I have a special bond that is impossible to describe.

A letter to my son on his first birthday @ohbotherblog

You are remarkably easygoing, for which I continue to count my blessings because, as we all know, your sister is not what you would call easygoing. You’ve been pleasant and content the entire first year of your life. Once you learned how to smile, you pretty much haven’t stopped. When someone smiles at you, you smile right back. You now have a big toothy (7 teeth!) grin that’s infectious. And you have a special smile that’s just for me that melts my heart every time. You give me the biggest kisses (sometimes with tongue–lol you’re going to be so embarrassed to read that later).

A letter to my son on his first birthday @ohbotherblog

For the longest time, really the only thing that ever upset you was not being held enough to your liking–as I said, “Mama’s Boy.” I’ve taken advantage of holding, hugging and snugging you as much as I could this past year. You pretty much shared my bed for the first two months of your life. Now that you’re crawling and almost walking (!), your desire to be held is weaning 🙁

A letter to my son on his first birthday @ohbotherblog

And oh boy, do you crawl. You climb the stairs like a champ all by yourself. You pull yourself up on everything. You’ve had a few tumbles into the coffee table… sorry about that. You’re strong and determined and persistent. Before you crawled, you rolled everywhere to get to your destination–I would watch you identify your target and then roll across the room to get there. You’re curious and investigative and full of joy. You’re obsessed with doors for some reason.

A letter to my son on his first birthday @ohbotherblog

You’ve been a wonderful sleeper your entire life. Now when you’re tired, you’ll lay your little head right down on the floor–or on me–and I know it’s time for bed. No fights; no fussing. You’ve slept through the night (10-11 hours) since you were about 15 weeks old. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. It really has made raising two kids under the age of three just a little bit easier.

Newborn only wants to be held @ohbotherblog

Newborn only wants to be held @ohbotherblog

Speaking of the second child thing… I’m sorry, Buddy. I’m sorry I only got your photos professionally taken once. I’m sorry I have yet to make a Shutterfly album for you when I made three for Holdy in the first year of her life. I’m sorry most of your toys are your sister’s hand-me-downs. I’m sorry I would sometimes prop your bottle up on a pillow because I wasn’t able to sit and hold you while you drank. I’m sorry that I work long hours and I can’t be with you all the time. It’s tough sometimes, Buddy. I hope you’ll understand. I will make you at least one Shutterfly book though, I promise.

You love to “drum” and I swear, a few times, you’ve mimicked my patterns and rhythms. You and I will have screeching sessions and you’ll match my tone and volume. Your laugh is contagious. You love when I dance like a dork and make up silly songs for you and your sister.

A letter to my son on his first birthday @ohbotherblog

Oh man, do you love your sister. From very early on, you’ve only had eyes for her. You love to watch her and try to join in what she’s doing. You’ll both probably kill me later for saying this, but you guys love taking baths together. You shriek and laugh and splash, so much so that I usually end up as soaked as the two of you.

A letter to my son on his first birthday @ohbotherblog

For her part, Holdy is a wonderful sister and is very good about sharing with you (or at least giving you a consolation toy when she takes one from you). She may get a little rough sometimes with her affection, but she loves you just as fiercely. I can’t wait to watch you grow and play together. I hope you’ll always remain so close. I always tell her if she doesn’t start to eat, her little brother will soon outgrow her so she better treat him nicely.

Whoa boy, you love to eat. Since we started you on solids about six months ago, you can’t get enough of food. Often you’ll get hangry and yell at me for not feeding you fast enough. I’ve improvised by mostly allowing you to feed yourself so you can eat at your desired speed. Needless to say, mealtimes around here are messy. You and I usually share dinner… with you eating about 75% of it. We just stopped nursing in the last week or so. I have to admit it makes me kind of sad, though I’m also relieved to take ownership of my body again. I’m proud to say I nursed both of you for a year.

A tale of two eaters - picky toddler and hungry baby @ohbotherblog

GB, it has been my absolute pleasure to be your mom and watch you grow this past year. You’ll probably never understand this, but your arrival into my life saved me. I was forever changed when you were first placed on my chest.

A letter to my son on his first birthday @ohbotherblog

Raising you and your sister has been the hardest thing I’ve ever done but it’s also the most important and rewarding thing I’ve ever done. Sometimes I don’t feel like I’m doing a great job. Sometimes I get frustrated. Sometimes I break down. But please know I will always try my best to do right by you and Holdy and to make you proud. I hope you’ll always want to be your Mama’s Boy.

GB’s First Birthday Party

22.03.15

We held GB’s First Birthday party yesterday at this adorable little pretzel shop, York City Pretzel Company (of which I happen to be an owner). I shared my lackadaisical approach to birthday planning the other day, but this party turned out pretty damn cute if I do say so myself. And, believe it or not, I actually made most of the decorations–I know: Who am I?

one week to GB’s party

GB's party inspiration board - red and aqua first birthday @ohbotherblog

GB’s first birthday party is one week away. Am I ready? Ha. Ha. No.

Here’s what I’ve got so far:

  • I’m hosting the party at my pretzel shop, so there will be soft pretzels.
  • I’m doing a general red and aqua color scheme and “little man” theme with mustaches and bowties.
  • I ordered GB an adorable first birthday outfit (from Etsy of course).
  • I’m using a digital red and aqua scrapbook paper download to make some pennants to hang, primarily on his highchair.
  • I (actually) made some cute cupcake picks using crafty stuff from AC Moore. I even now own a Martha Stewart paper punch. Who am I?
  • I ordered some vanilla cupcakes to stick those picks in… and got a free smash cake in the process!
  • I found some red and blue sodas that I’m going to display in a metal drink tub.
  • I ordered a Dr. Seuss birthday book for guests to sign.
  • I’m using butcher paper to cover the tables.
  • I’m going to pick up some red and aqua helium balloons.

and… that’s about it. Since this is a small gathering with just family, they shouldn’t judge me if I don’t have a Big Top and photo booth and clown and foie gras, right? You guys know how I feel about birthday parties, after all.

I’ll share photos after the party!

happy 11 months, gb

Okay, so I’m three days late but it’s Restaurant Week York (which I’m running), so cut me some slack, wouldja?

happy 11 months, gb @ohbotherblog

Holy crap, 11 months.

Weight: I honestly have no idea and I’m not about to wake him up to weigh him. Maybe 21 lbs?

Likes: Eating! open mouth kissing (with tongue!), climbing up the steps, pulling himself up on everything, stealing things from his sister

Dislikes: Not being paid attention to, being scolded (“Don’t bite” is the magic trigger that makes him cry)

Eats: Everything and a lot of it. At this point it seems like he’s over his bottle (thank god for no more formula)–he wants ALLTHEFOOD! I’ve been trying to nurse first thing in the morning and last thing at night, but he’s now disinterested in my boobs 🙁

Sleeps: A great sleeper–goes down and stays down no problem. Two naps a day.

Teeth: Five

Accomplishments: Climbing! Pulling up on everything, standing, waving, clapping, high fives, mimicking, screeching, “So big!”

He’ll be walking before too long!
